Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium is a one-acre, family-owned garden in Palm Springs devoted to cacti and other desert plants from around the world. Begun in 1939 as a nursery by Patricia and Chester “Cactus Slim” Moorten and developed into its present form in 1955, it grew through the founders’ own collecting trips to places including Baja California, mainland Mexico, and Guatemala. Today it holds about 3,000 plants arranged by desert regions, with outdoor displays and a greenhouse called the Cactarium. Long tied to Palm Springs’s identity, it reflects the diversity, habitats, and striking forms of desert flora.
