Tahquitz Canyon in Palm Springs, on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation below the San Jacinto Mountains, has been both a natural landmark and a place of deep importance to the Cahuilla for at least 5,000 years. After Lake Cahuilla disappeared, nearby communities relied on canyon water sources such as this one. Archaeological evidence includes stone tools, ceramic ollas, and irrigation ditches used before outsiders arrived. The canyon also stands at the center of Agua Caliente tradition through the powerful figure Tahquitz, a shaman linked to supernatural punishment and earthquakes. In more recent times, preservation, archaeology, public access, and ecological restoration have all added to its significance.
