Deadwood Peak is a 6,280-foot summit on the crest of Washington’s Cascade Range along the eastern border of Mount Rainier National Park, just north of Chinook Pass. Named for nearby Deadwood Lakes and Deadwood Creek, whose names reflected the many downed trees in the area, it derives from the local landscape rather than a person or event. Though modest in height for the Cascades, it is valued for its easy access above Chinook Pass, with a short scramble to a summit offering unobstructed views of Mount Rainier. Its runoff drains west to White River tributaries and east to the Yakima River in a marine west coast climate marked by heavy snow and avalanche risk.
