Naches Peak is a 6,452-foot mountain on the crest of Washington’s Cascade Range, just southeast of Chinook Pass. Its summit lies at a notable meeting of boundaries, dividing Mount Rainier National Park from the William O. Douglas Wilderness and Pierce County from Yakima County. Named in 1927 after a proposal from the Yakima Chamber of Commerce and approval by Asahel Curtis, the peak is closely tied today to the popular 3.5-mile Naches Peak Loop Trail and a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. It also forms a small drainage divide, with water flowing west toward Chinook Creek and east toward tributaries of the American River, in a climate of snowy winters and clearer late summers.
