Grand Isle County in the Lake Champlain Islands has a vibrant arts scene, with painters, photographers, musicians, crafters, and many other artists making their home there. The Islands host Shakespeare performances, Lipizzan stallion shows, choral performances, an arts academy, concerts by professional musicians, and local talent shows, and the arts are woven into the fabric of this small community. American composer and U.S. Marine Band director John Philip Sousa vacationed in the Lake Champlain Islands; in addition to 137 marches and hundreds of other musical arrangements, he wrote three novels and an autobiography. This property was a dairy farm for decades, and since 2010 Grand Isle ArtWorks has operated a gallery and café in the farmhouse, showing artwork by Vermont artists in mediums including pottery, glass, fiber arts, and watercolors, much of it reflecting the landscapes of Grand Isle and Vermont. Elizabeth Fisk found a use for old looms stored in attics and barns throughout Grand Isle County and organized local women into a weaving business making rag rugs, bedspreads, tablecloths, and tapestries on looms made obsolete by the Industrial Revolution's mass production of fabrics.
