Solitude Mountain Resort is a ski area in Big Cottonwood Canyon in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, southeast of Salt Lake City, known for family-friendly terrain with many beginner and intermediate runs. Developed in the 1950s by Robert M. Barrett after he bought land in the canyon, it opened in 1957 and later expanded through new ownership and modernization under Gary DeSeelhorst, including Utah’s first express quad chairlift and Creekside lodge. The resort also adopted RFID lift-ticket technology early, added improved access to Honeycomb Canyon after Deer Valley took over operations in 2015, and today also offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through its Nordic Center.
