Pe-Ri-Tska-Wa-Ku-Re honors Crow Flies High, a Hidatsa chief and leader on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. He lived at Like-A-Fishhook Village until a disagreement with another tribal chief led him and his followers to leave. Around 1870, Crow Flies High and 140 other tribal members settled near Fort Buford about 120 miles to the west. Although that settlement was not occupied continuously, it served as a winter camp and as a base for hunting expeditions. In the early 1880's, a summer camp called Crow Flies High Village was established on the west bank of the Missouri River, about 3 1/2 miles northwest of the point. In this agricultural settlement, women tended garden plots, while men fished, hunted, and chopped firewood for steamboats navigating the river. For nearly 25 years, Crow Flies High and his band were self-sustaining and no longer received government rations. By 1893, little game remained to hunt and settlers were moving into the region. Those factors, along with military pressure, forced the chief and his band to return to the reservation under U.S. Army escort in 1894. Crow Flies High died of pneumonia in 1900.
