Pepperbox Wilderness Area is a protected part of New York’s Adirondack Park and Forest Preserve in the town of Webb. Its mostly flat landscape is shaped less by mountains than by water, with forty-six bodies of water, extensive wetlands, alder swamps, marshes, and beaver flows. Spruce, fir, red maple, and northern hardwoods reflect its varied ground conditions. Though some ponds are low in productivity, the broader wetland system supports abundant birdlife, small mammals, and unusually high species diversity. Marked by past burning and logging, the area remains remote and lightly used, with difficult access and only about two miles of foot trails.
