High Falls on the Oswegatchie River is a remote twenty-foot waterfall in the Five Ponds Wilderness of Adirondack State Park, reached mainly by canoe or hiking trails near Wanakena. The river drops over glaciated granite gneiss in an unusually open white pine forest, shaped partly by major windstorms in 1950 and 1995. South of the falls lies the largest area of virgin forest in the northeastern United States and New York’s largest trailless area. High Falls also reflects the region’s travel and logging history, from the Rich Lumber Company railroad and the old Red Horse Trail to the Albany Road, before becoming a protected scenic destination.
