Stillwater Mountain, a 2,244-foot peak in New York’s Adirondacks, is most closely associated with the fire lookout tower on its summit. A wooden tower erected in 1912 was replaced in 1919 by a 47-foot steel Aermotor fire tower that became part of the Adirondack wildfire observation network. The tower remained in service through the 1988 fire lookout season before closing in 1989, when aerial detection was judged more effective. Although no longer used for fire spotting, it stayed in place and became a preservation focus. After reorganizing in 2015, the Friends of Stillwater Fire Tower completed a full restoration in July 2016, and the tower is now open to the public seasonally.
