Four Americans were associated with this part of Drumore Township. Dr. David Ramsey, born 1 mile S.W. in 1749, was a historian, surgeon, and patriot, a Continental Army surgeon, friend of Washington, constructive leader of Congress, talented man of letters, and the father of American history; he is best known for his “American Revolution,” “Life of Washington,” “History of America,” and “Universal History Americanized,” and he practiced medicine and died in 1815 at Charleston, S.C. General John Steele, born 3 miles N in 1758, owned and resided on this farm, volunteered at 18, became captain at 19, colonel on Washington’s staff at 21, and later general; he was wounded at Brandywine and Germantown, served in the Penna. Legislature, House in 1801, was Speaker of the Senate in 1806, collector of the Port of Philada from 1808 to 1825, and as commissioner to treat with warring tribes received the famous speech of Logan the Indian Chief; he died in 1827. Col. Thomas Porter, born 3 miles N in 1738, was a pioneer spirit of American independence, served on the Committee of Sixty in 1774, and organized 10 Lancaster County companies, but failing health prevented him from going into the field; he died in 1777. Col. Archibald Steele, born 3 miles N in 1742, was noted for ruggedness and ardor, walked to Boston at the call of Bunker Hill, led 7 picked men in breaking trail for the Montgomery expedition against Quebec, where he fought with distinction, then contracted a chronic illness in the icy St. Lawrence while trailing an overcrowded boat on the retreat; thereafter he served as commissary and finally as head of Philadelphia Army, and he died in 1833.
