Earlier bathrooms lacked indoor plumbing, so most privies or outhouses were holes in the ground with sheds and seats over them, located several feet from the main home. When a hole filled, the structure was moved to a new site and a new hole was dug. The old holes were then filled in, often with junk or trash. A beautifully restored privy, and the "treasures" used to fill it after it was no longer in use, can be seen at the Dougherty Home in Old Mission.
