When federal troops reoccupied the fort following the Civil War, they found the old picket barracks were no longer standing. During the final two years that the Army used the post, enlisted men of the 41st Infantry and 9th Cavalry lived in tents under a brush arbor at this location. The Black troops, called "Buffalo Soldiers" by the Indians, proved to be hard-riding cavalrymen despite racism in the Army.
