Peary–MacMillan Arctic Museum

At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, this institution is the only museum in the lower forty-eight states devoted entirely to Arctic studies. Named for Arctic explorers Robert E. Peary and Donald B. MacMillan, it grew from Bowdoin’s longstanding role in northern exploration, beginning with an eighteen sixty expedition to Labrador and West Greenland and continuing through later student research voyages. Opened in nineteen sixty-seven and now housed in a purpose-built center that opened in two thousand twenty-three, it holds more than forty-one thousand objects, photographs, and films and serves both the public and Bowdoin’s teaching and research on Arctic environments, societies, and history.
