On the night of February 15th, 1865, Captain P.L. Bible and six local Confederate soldiers used this site on Bean's Mountain as an overnight campsite when they were attacked in their sleep. One soldier was killed, another was wounded, one man was taken prisoner, and four escaped. The survivors claimed they had been attacked by Union "bushwackers." It is possible that the surprise night attack on Captain Bible's small Confederate detachment was carried out by a scouting party from Company D, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry seeking Confederate guerrillas who had killed three men on the Conasauga River the day before.
