In 1910 J.G. White Construction Company began work on Ocoee Dam #1. A coffer dam was built using large timbers and bows of evergreens, laid to help hold back the banks of dirt. Tracks on top of the coffer dam allowed dirt cars to dump into the dam for construction of a steam line. In July 1911 the framework was up and ready to pour cement with the help of stiff leg derricks, and so much concrete was used that the quarry was kept going all day and all night. It soon became called the "Solid Concrete Parksville Dam," and construction was completed in late December 1911. The dam is 135 feet high and 840 feet long, consists of 17,000 cubic yards of concrete, can produce 19,200 kilowatts, has a maximum discharge of 45,000 cubic feet per second, and has 5 generating units. Parksville Lake has 109 miles of shoreline and a water surface of 1,930 acres. It was the first plant to supply hydroelectric power to Chattanooga and is the oldest plant still in operation.
