On October 11, 1918, at Vauzandigny, France, Corporal James D. Heriot displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy. With four other soldiers, he organized a combat crew and attacked an enemy machine gun nest that had been inflicting heavy casualties on his company. During the advance, two of his men were killed by heavy fire from all sides and the remaining two sought shelter. Unmindful of the hazard attached to the mission, Heriot alone, with fixed bayonet, charged the machine gun, advanced through the fire for 30 yards, and forced the enemy to surrender. During this action he received several wounds in the arm, and later the same day he was killed while charging another nest.
