West of Delray Beach, Florida, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens stands as a major center for Japanese arts and culture on 188.5 acres of Morikami Park. Named for George Morikami, who donated his farm after remaining as the last local member of the Yamato Colony after World War II, the site grew from a 1977 museum in the Yamato-kan to a larger main building in 1993. Its collections, exhibitions, theater, library, and cultural demonstrations are complemented by Roji-en, a six-part garden completed in 2001 that traces key periods and ideas in Japanese garden design. Festivals and seasonal events continue to link South Florida with Japanese cultural history.
