Dutch Island Light on Dutch Island in Narragansett Bay guided vessels through the bay’s west passage and into Dutch Island Harbor. Established after federal purchase of land in 1825, it began with a stone tower in 1826 or 1827 and was rebuilt in 1857 as the present brick lighthouse with a Fresnel lens. The station later gained a fog bell, changed to a flashing red beacon, and was automated in 1947 before being discontinued in 1977. The island also carried a longer history of Narragansett, Dutch, English, and military use. Restoration efforts beginning in 2000 led to the lighthouse being relit in 2007.
