Jamestown Windmill, a late 18th-century smock mill on North Road in Jamestown, Rhode Island, was built in 1787 after British occupation forces destroyed an earlier mill around the time of the Battle of Rhode Island. Standing about 30 feet tall, it ground coarse flint corn for animal feed and finer cornmeal for local farm families, serving Jamestown’s agricultural economy until 1896. Built on land confiscated from Colonel Joseph Wanton because he was a Tory, it later underwent several 20th-century renovations. Its survival preserves a rare link to wartime disruption, the post-Revolutionary era, and the town’s farming and industrial past.
