Wayne County High School opened on September 11, 1922 in a two-story frame house where the Community Center sits. The brick school building shown here was completed in 1925. In the 1940s, concrete bleachers were built overlooking the football field, which was located on the present site of the bus garage. The gym, now the Community Center, was also built that decade. As other high schools were established in the area, "county" was dropped from the name, and the school became Wayne High School. The current high school was built in the 1960s, and the old building became the junior high school. In the 1980s, the old building was burned and demolished.
