Matthew M. Neely, born at Grove in 1874, spent his boyhood here in the former town of Market. He served in the Spanish American War and graduated from W. Va. Univ. before opening a law practice in Fairmont. His public career included service as mayor of Fairmont, clerk of the House of Delegates, and twenty-first governor of W. Va. from 1941 to 1945. Elected to five terms in the U. S. House and Senate between 1912 and 1958, he died while serving in the Senate at age 83.
