Fort New Salem in Salem, West Virginia, is an outdoor living-history museum arranged as a nineteenth-century frontier settlement on about eight acres beside Salem International University. Created from more than 18 relocated log structures, the village began in 1971 and opened to the public in 1974 as part of Salem College, now Salem International University, before later passing to the Fort New Salem Foundation, Inc. Rather than preserving a single original fort, it brings together historic buildings to interpret the region’s broader past through crafts, daily life, and traditions. Its seasonal programs include The Spirit of Christmas in the Mountains, celebrating traditional Christmas folkways in West Virginia.
