The Cannon Balls
Nature
The Cannon Balls are a distinct three-peak ridge in Grafton County, New Hampshire, in the Kinsman Range of the White Mountains, lying between Cannon Mountain and Kinsman Mountain. Their name derives from nearby Cannon Mountain, whose boulder line was long thought to resemble an antique artillery cannon. Beyond their place in this mountain landscape, the ridge is also a watershed divide: water from its south side flows through Cascade Brook to the Pemigewasset and Merrimack rivers and the Gulf of Maine, while its north side drains through Coppermine Brook and the Gale, Ammonoosuc, and Connecticut rivers to Long Island Sound. The Appalachian Trail crosses its southern base.
