Iron Mountain
Nature
Iron Mountain is a hill on the Lake Wales Ridge in central Florida, just north of Lake Wales, rising 295 feet above sea level and ranking among the highest points in peninsular Florida. Although small compared with true mountain regions, it is especially prominent in a state known for low, flat land. Its soil contains citronelle, a hematite-bearing rock that oxidizes when exposed to air and gives the earth a distinctive red-brown color. The summit is also the site of the tower at Bok Tower Gardens, which has made Iron Mountain one of the peninsula’s better-known high points.
