Windom Peak is a 14,087-foot summit in Colorado’s Needle Mountains, within the Weminuche Wilderness of San Juan National Forest northeast of Durango. The highest point in both La Plata County and the San Juan River drainage basin, it is also the tallest mountain in the Needle Mountains and one of that remote group’s three fourteeners, with Mount Eolus and Sunlight Peak. Rising above upper Chicago Basin near Twin Lakes, it is popular with summer climbers who want a more isolated fourteener. Named for Minnesota senator William Windom, the mountain was historically called Windom Mountain until Windom Peak became the official name in 1974.
