Mount Eolus is a 14,085-foot peak in Colorado’s Needle Mountains, within the Weminuche Wilderness of San Juan National Forest, and is one of the state’s fourteeners. Named for the Greek god of the wind, it was recorded as “Aeolus” in the 1874 Hayden Survey before “Eolus,” used in the 1878 Wheeler Survey, became standard. The mountain is one of three fourteeners clustered around Upper Chicago Basin, with Eolus on the west side and Sunlight Peak and Windom Peak to the east. Its nearby subpeak, North Eolus, also rises above 14,000 feet but is not usually counted as a separate official fourteener because of its limited topographic prominence.
