Sunlight Peak is a 14,059-foot fourteener in the Needle Mountains of southwestern Colorado, within the Weminuche Wilderness of San Juan National Forest, about 28.5 miles northeast by north of Durango. Named in 1902, apparently for its descriptive quality, it is one of three fourteeners in this compact high alpine area around Chicago Basin and Twin Lakes, together with Mount Eolus and Windom Peak. Though set in a notably remote part of the Rockies, Sunlight Peak is a popular summer climbing destination. Its standard route, the Red Couloir on the south side, is usually a non-technical scramble, but the exposed final move onto the summit block gives the mountain much of its reputation.
