Indiana's first Soil and Water Conservation District was organized here in 1940, and the state's last was established in Tipton County in 1974. These districts made major contributions to the conservation and wise use of soil and water resources, bringing great social, economic, and environmental benefits to Indiana. The citizens of Vanderburgh County were recognized for their pioneering leadership.
