Sawtooth Crater
Nature
Sawtooth Crater, also called Sawtooth Ridge, is an extinct shield volcano in northeastern Oregon in Baker and Union counties, northeast of Baker City, along the edge of the Wallowa Mountains. Its geology includes a volcanic plug, two radial dikes, olivine basalt, and platy andesite, all reflecting its volcanic origin. Although its age is unknown, it remains a notable landform in this rugged part of Oregon. The mountain is accessible on foot by a U.S. Forest Service road beginning at Medical Springs, and it is recognized both as a volcanic crater and as part of the surrounding mountain landscape.
