Cornucopia Peak is an 8,643-foot mountain in northeastern Oregon’s southern Wallowa Mountains, rising sharply above the old Cornucopia mining district near the ghost town of Cornucopia. Ranked Oregon’s 87th-highest peak, it drains through Pine Creek to the Snake River and is notable for gaining nearly 4,000 feet in two miles from the town below. Its name reflects the nearby gold-mining boomtown that flourished in the late 1800s, and mines on its east slope were once considered Oregon’s leading lode mines. A summit fire lookout built in 1924 is gone, and the peak is now known for backcountry skiing, though severe weather and avalanche danger remain significant.
