Coney Rock is a glacially formed granite and gneiss ridge in Storrs, within Mansfield, eastern Connecticut, rising about 600 feet and stretching roughly 1,000 feet. It anchors the 200-acre Coney Rock Preserve, shared by the town and Joshua’s Trust, where ledge, marsh, groves, glacial erratics, and about five miles of trails coexist with remnants of an older farm such as stone walls, pastures, an old road, and a spring. Its stepped cliff and long-used name, of uncertain origin, are part of its local identity. Clear-cut in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the ridge later became protected through land purchases in 2001, 2002, and 2009.
