On Monday, June 18, 2001, at 8:20 p.m., an F3 tornado with gale-force winds of over 200 miles per hour tore through southern Burnett County and eastern Washburn County, carving a path of destruction through the townships of Bashaw, Daniels, Dewey, La Follette, Siren, and Wood River and the Village of Siren. It left shattered lives and broken dreams, but also a desire to rebuild and begin again. Three lives were lost, fourteen people were injured, the tornado remained on the ground for sixty-nine minutes and traveled forty-one miles, its path reached a widest point of one-half mile, five hundred fifty buildings were destroyed or damaged, fifty-one thousand acres of land were damaged, and estimated monetary damage exceeded seventeen million dollars.
