North Guard
Nature
North Guard is a remote Sierra Nevada peak in Kings Canyon National Park near Mount Brewer and Mount Farquhar. Rising 13,327 feet, it is the 87th highest summit in California and the second-highest point on the northern Great Western Divide. The mountain is best known not simply for elevation but for its steep relief and distinguished climbing, with its east side rising 3,858 feet above East Lake in three miles. Named on Lieutenant Milton F. Davis’s 1896 map, it drew major climbers including Norman Clyde, David Brower, Hervey Voge, Fred Beckey, and Rick Nolting, and became one of the Sierra Nevada’s classic climbing peaks.
