Deadman Canyon, in the south-central high country of Kings Canyon National Park, is a glacier-carved valley of steep granite walls, a crossing stream, and distinctly alpine scenery. Its memorable name comes from a grave beside the trail, enclosed by a rustic timber fence and identified as that of Alfred Moniere, an Iberian sheepherder and mountain man. Accounts of his death differ, with one saying he was murdered and another that he died after falling ill while his partner went to Fresno for help. Along with this somber association, the canyon is also known for aspens, pines, and diverse mountain wildflowers and shrubs.
