400 North is a historic street that was the route used by pioneers entering the valley on Oct. 20, 1850. James Pace, the captain for whom the city of Payson was named, is associated with this route. Early settlers gave the street the name “Cow Lane” because cows used it while traveling to pastures on the east and west of town. In 1888 it became the street herds of cattle and sheep used to reach summer and winter ranges. Herds used it for over 100 years, and local residents still know it as “Cow Lane” today.
