On the south edge of the largest unplowed, protected tract remaining from the 142 million acres of tallgrass prairie grassland that once stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, less than ten percent of that prairie still exists today, found mostly in the Flint and Osage Hills areas of Kansas and Oklahoma. In an increasingly crowded and noisy world, this landscape is an oasis of space and silence, where the same beautiful vistas can be experienced that greeted the earliest human hunters and gatherers many thousands of years ago. The area is a national treasure owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization.
