First erected in 1952 at the site of the newly built Murlin Heights Elementary School, this flagpole stood there for 66 years. In 2018, the Vandalia-Butler School district decided to close the school and have it demolished. With the blessing of the Vandalia-Butler School board, members of the Vandalia-Butler American Legion 668 removed the flagpole, and the Pinnacle Flagpole Company restored it for placement on the Post 668 property. It was rededicated in November of 2023, and Connie Strehle, the last principal of Murlin Heights Elementary School, was given the honor of raising the American Flag on the restored pole at this site.
