New Fairfield's war dead include Samuel Fairchild and Burmell Barnum of the militia, killed in action during the French and Indian War; Frederick C. Barnum, Augustus E. Bronson, Edward Griffin, William B. Leach, Henry H. Hyatt, Homer B. Barnum, and Edward B. Couch of the U.S. Army, killed in action during the Civil War; William H. Lessey and Edgar A. Eastwood of the U.S. Army, who died as prisoners of war during the Civil War; George A. Fairchild, a private first class in the U.S. Army, killed in action during World War I; Joseph W. Schimanskey and Frank W. O’Hearn, private first class marines, and Kenneth D. Wood, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force, killed in action during World War II; Richard Q. Braman and Ralph A. Britton, marines killed in action during Korea; and Edward J. Monahan, Jr., Michael J. Fratto, and John C. Reitwiesner, killed in action during Vietnam. Their names were left to speak of their supreme sacrifice.
