Blood Mountain, in northern Georgia, is the highest point on the state’s section of the Appalachian Trail and its sixth-tallest peak. In the Chattahoochee National Forest on the Lumpkin-Union county line, it is known for broad rock outcrops, expansive views, and a dense network of hiking routes, including the steep climb from Neel Gap and gentler approaches from Lake Winfield Scott. The mountain’s name has uncertain origins, variously linked to conflict between Cherokee and Muscogee peoples or to reddish plants and lichen near the summit. Its significance also includes important plant habitat, Civilian Conservation Corps stone structures, and a central place in Appalachian Trail history.
