Blood Mountain Wilderness is a protected area in northern Georgia within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Established in 1991, it encompasses 7,800 acres and is managed by the United States Forest Service within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Its centerpiece is Blood Mountain, the highest point in the wilderness at 4,458 feet. The area includes 10.75 miles of the Appalachian Trail, featuring the first wilderness section north of the trail’s southern start on Springer Mountain and one of the trail’s busiest stretches. In recent decades, the wilderness has also faced wildfire damage and black bear conflicts that led to seasonal canister requirements for overnight campers near the trail.
