Buffalo Peaks Wilderness is a protected mountain area in central Colorado within the San Isabel and Pike National Forests. Established in 1993, it encompasses 43,410 acres in the Mosquito Range and is named for East Buffalo Peak and West Buffalo Peak, two highly eroded volcanic mountains that shape the landscape. The wilderness is especially known for its twin peaks and for wildlife, including Colorado’s largest herd of bighorn sheep. Its significance lies in preserving this distinctive mountain environment, with the Buffalo Peaks as its defining landmarks.
