Park City Mountain Resort grew from Park City’s mining past into one of the town’s defining attractions and a major U.S. ski destination. Opened in 1963 as Treasure Mountain to help revive the local economy after mining declined, it first used a mine train through Spiro Tunnel and a mining hoist to bring skiers to the slopes, while former ore trams became chairlifts. Renamed Park City Ski Area in 1966–67 and Park City Mountain Resort in 1996, it later merged with neighboring Canyons Resort after Vail Resorts’ 2014 purchase, becoming the nation’s largest lift-served ski resort. It also hosted events during the 2002 Winter Olympics and remains central to Park City year-round.
