Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail State Park in Summit County follows a former railroad corridor for 28 miles between Park City and Echo Reservoir, tracing the region’s coal, silver, and rail history. Rail lines first linked Coalville, Echo, and Park City in the late 19th century to haul coal, including fuel for pumps in Park City’s silver mines, and Union Pacific later abandoned its line in 1989. The former rail grade was converted into Utah’s first non-motorized recreational trail and opened to the public in 1992. Covering about 450 acres, it preserves an industrial transportation route as a long-distance public path through mountain and river-valley landscape.
