Drift Creek Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area on the Oregon Coast in Siuslaw National Forest, established in 1984 and covering 5,798 acres. Named for driftwood along Drift Creek, it features steep, rugged terrain and heavy rainfall that sustains one of the largest remaining old-growth stands in the Coast Range, with Sitka spruce, western hemlock, western red cedar, and Douglas fir. Long before federal protection, the Alsea tribe hunted and gathered berries here, and later settlers unsuccessfully tried to homestead the land. The area also supports salmon runs, Roosevelt elk, black bear, and endangered northern spotted owls and bald eagles, and remains a place for hiking, fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching.
