An ambitious railroad project to a high Seven Devils copper mine at an elevation of 6800 feet created great excitement here in 1898-1899. If funding had been available to complete it, it would have been Idaho's highest mountain railroad. Construction began near a canyon rim more than a vertical mile above the Snake River, but the line was never finished. The grade can still be seen near Kinney Point, and remains of an old mining smelter at Landore also survive from that time.
