Mount Werner, a 10,570-foot peak in the Park Range of the Rocky Mountains east-southeast of Steamboat Springs, rises prominently above northwestern Colorado and drains into the Yampa River watershed. Formerly called Storm Mountain, it was renamed in 1964, commonly associated with 1965 as well, to honor Steamboat Springs skier and Olympian Buddy Werner after his death in an avalanche in Switzerland. More than a single summit, it forms a ski mountain with several named high points. Its slopes hold Steamboat Ski Resort, known for heavy snowfall, and the mountain has become a symbol of the town’s strong Olympic and competitive skiing heritage.
