Steamboat Ski Resort, at Steamboat Springs in northwestern Colorado on Mount Werner, opened as Storm Mountain ski area on January 12, 1963 and gradually took on the Steamboat name through ownership and identity changes. The mountain is closely linked to Olympian Buddy Werner; after his death in 1964, Mount Werner was named in his honor in 1965. Later ownership, including LTV, Intrawest, and Alterra Mountain Company, helped shape its modern development. Known as one of Colorado’s best-known mountain resorts, it features extensive terrain, notable attractions such as Mavericks Superpipe, repeated NCAA championship hosting, and major recent expansion through the Full Steam Ahead program completed in 2024.
