Father Escalante
History
2
In 1776, the Catholic priest Father Escalante came into Utah, crossed the Green River at Jensen, and camped there for two days. His diary shows that he camped one night at the junction of the Strawberry and Duchesne rivers and then traveled northwest through what he called the "Canyon of the Swallows," the canyon where Ivie's Ranch is now located. In pioneer days, this became an important intersection, and distances were reckoned from this point.
