SS Monarch was a large wooden passenger and package freighter built at Sarnia, Ontario, in 1890 for Great Lakes service, carrying both travelers and cargo mainly between Sarnia, Thunder Bay, and Duluth. Strongly reinforced with iron and equipped with a powerful steam engine, she also holds a place in Sarnia’s industrial history as the city’s last shipbuilding product until World War II. On her final voyage in 1906, Monarch left Thunder Bay for Sarnia and, in a blinding snowstorm, ran aground at Blake Point off Isle Royale. Nearly everyone escaped, but the wreck later broke apart, leaving an important underwater archaeological site.
